The Woods
Reclaimed oak whisky barrel wood.
This wood comes in the form of individual whisky staves which collectively make up a barrel.
The wood is a beautiful warm golden colour, with naturally occurring dark striations and ridges throughout.
Some wood is naturally darker in colour with more complex grain.
Like fingerprints, each piece if wood is entirely unique, which means that each piece of art is unique too.
Oak whisky barrel wood is versatile and I use it to create wall art, bookmarks, keyrings, ornaments and earrings. It's also surprisingly light and good for posting.
Oak holds the meanings of longevity, devotion and wisdom and makes a lovely choice for an anniversary gift.
Responsibly Foraged Wood
I naturally use the woods that are most common to this part of the world.
These include Silver Birch, various Firs and Pines and are the trees most likely to have branches come down in a storm.
They are all beautiful woods to work with, generally pale, with a slightly darker mid spot and light rings.
These make beautiful ornaments and earrings.
Occasionally other wood is available such as Hawthorn, Cherry, Alder, Beech, Barberry and Maple.
These have different colours, grains and densities. Barberry is particularly lovely as it has a bright yellow wood.
I will use what is naturally available so this selection varies throughout the year.
Reclaimed Commercial Wood
Using pieces of furniture, such as cabinet or door panels is one of my favourite ways to create large wall pieces. I have also used floor boards to create larger panels.
